Here are urbanmole’s top tips to winning interviews.

1. Get the basics right

Make sure you know where, what time and who you are meeting and turn up with ample time for you to find the location and get comfortable.

2. Prepare!

Maximise your chances by doing all you can that is within your control to succeed:
Research the company and competitors (their website and news sites) and find out anything topical to the job you are interviewing for
Think through your answers to some of the standard questions (Why you? Why do you want this job? Why work for this company?)
Prepare some thought-out questions to ask the interviewers, it shows you have prepared
Reread your CV and the job advert

3. 90% of communication is non verbal

Help yourself project a professional and capable persona:
Ensure that you are dressed appropriately for the interview
Relax but maintain an "open" posture (do not cross legs or arms, try to minimise "fidgeting")
Smile and keep eye contact with the interviewer

4. Surviving the actual interview

By their nature, job interviews can be unpredictable so if you are asked a tricky question stay calm and take time to think through your response (e.g. repeat the question is a simple and effective technique).

Don't forget that the interviewer will also determining whether you are a good "fit" for the company so it is important to try and let your personality come through your responses…
